The establishment of the Denver Bulldog Australian Football Club happened in three distinct episodes. A few discussions between Craig Jones, Paul Renouf and Jim Baldwin occurred over ’98. The Bulldogs nickname was mentioned, but time passed for nearly a year before anyone met. Through many emails and calls, an inaugural kick was set for Labor Day weekend ’98 at Denver’s City Park. Only Jones and Baldwin showed. Renouf had coordinated the televised AFL Grand Final event for several years. In September ’98, footies in the carpark at the half-time break attracted some 10 or so thugs. It is certain that a recruitment drive was made for a kick in a park – with shorts and maybe even boots! Just who agreed to show up is lost in the obscurities of drink, but the following week, Jones, Baldwin, Renouf and Dainauski were joined by a few expats and some perplexed American friends that agreed to “do this every Saturday”.
